If your local pro sports team wanted a new stadium...
Would you be in support of it?The issue right now in San Diego is to give the Chargers a new stadium. The city is refusing to let them have it, despite them offering to build it using only their own private money, with no debt to the taxpayers. This is forcing the Chargers to look to the suburbs (Chula Vista, National City, Oceanside), to try to make stadium plans.Personally, I am in favor, and I think it's ridiculous that SD is so against it. San Diego has recieved huge economic boosts from its other new stadium, Petco Park where the San Diego Padres play baseball at, and SD has major money problems due to corrupt politicians right now. And with the Chargers offering to pay for the entire stadium themselves? Come on SD, get it together. Let em have their stadium.
What is your favorite baseball team?
Mine is the San Diego Padres. I started off as a Seattle Mariners fan as a kid cuz I was a fan of Ken Griffey Jr, but I started following the Padres because I've lived in San Diego for all of my life, and after Griffey and A-Rod parted from Seattle, I stopped following the M's on a regular basis.
Ripken, Gwynn, McGwire headline Hall of Fame ballot
Cal Ripken Jr. and Tony Gwynn will likely make the Hall of Fame in their first year of eligibility. Mark McGwire was believed to be a virtual lock as well before being linked to alleged steroid use. Ripken, Gwynn and McGwire headline the first-time candidates on the 2007 Hall of Fame ballot, which was released on Monday. Jose Canseco, whose book led to a congressional hearing on steroid use in baseball, is also on the ballot for the first time. Canseco has admitted to using steroids and accused McGwire of also taking performance-enhancing drugs when the two were teammates with the Oakland Athletics. McGwire refused to talk about his past when he appeared before a congressional committee. With 583 career home runs, McGwire would have likely been selected to the Hall of Fame. He became the first player to hit 70 home runs in a season in 1998 and followed with 65 in 1999. Canseco hit 462 career homers. Ripken is baseball's ultimate ironman, eclipsing Lou Gehrig's record of 2,130 consecutive games. Ripken spent his entire 21-year career with the Baltimore Orioles and set his record of 2,632 consecutive games from May 30, 1982 to September 20, 1998....
Astros sign OF Carlos Lee, RHP Williams
- By keeping Carlos Lee in the state, the Houston Astros went a long way in addressing their biggest need. After finishing the 2006 season with the Texas Rangers, Lee signed a six-year, $100 million contract with the Astros on Friday. Houston had been searching for a power hitter to bolster an anemic offense that was last in the National League with a .255 average last season and has been among the worst in the league over the last three years. In addition to improving their lineup, the Astros also strengthened their starting rotation Friday, signing righthander Woody Williams to a two-year deal worth $12.5 million. "This is a historic day for our franchise," Astros general manager Tim Purpura said. "We succeeded in fulfilling two of our offseason objectives, obtaining a run-producing middle-of-the-order power hitter, and we bolstered our starting pitching staff." The Astros' lineup figures to receive a huge boost from the Lee, 30, who split 2006 between the Milwaukee Brewers and Rangers, batting a combined .300 with career highs of 37 homers and 116 RBI. He also stole a personal-best 19 bases and struck out just 65 times - the lowest total of his...
