| | My 10,000th Post...What OTHER Topic Could it Be...lol? | | I figured I owed it to my friends here to make my 10,000th post one for the record books and that anything other than "ANOTHER" Sarah Palin discussion would be a major disappointment to everyone here! The only question was exactly what to write about since she continues to provide with with an endless supply of discussion topics. Finally, after much deep and careful thought, I made my choice so without further ado, here is my entry into the five figure category...(drum roll)...A discarded contract found in the trash by students of California State University, Stanislaus, has resulted in an investigation by California Attorney General Jerry Brown. The document includes the demands made by self-described "hockey mom" Sarah Palin for her scheduled speech at the school this summer. Sarah must either be given first class airline tickets or a private Lear 60 or larger. She will have three rooms at a luxury hotel. For her speech she must have water bottles with bendable straws. AUDIENCE QUESTIONS MUST BE PRE-SCREENED!In announcing the investigation, state Attorney General Jerry Brown said, "This is not about Sarah Palin. The issues are... | |

| | If We Can Bail Out Industry, Why Can't We Bail Out Education? | | This is so not far, just when people need the services that Community Colleges Supply, the funding to these colleges. Here are some facts about the proposed cuts in the Community College system in California at least.
State leaders project about a $24 billion deficit. This is not just a problem facing the state in 2009-10. If all the Governor’s proposed solutions were to be adopted, the state would still face a $15 billion shortfall in 2010-11.The Governor’s proposed $940 million in cuts would close access for 250,000 students statewide – more than the entire UC system. The state Community College system has already added more than 150,000 new students this year alone, but is not being funded for 140,000 of them.Proposed cuts to community colleges are disproportionate to K-12 schools, UCs and CSUs.The state is proposing a tuition fee hike for community colleges from the current $20 per unit to between $22 and $60 per unit.Proposed cuts to categorical programs (CalWORKS, EOPS, DSPS, Matriculation, and more) are expected to be $85 million statewide this 2008-09 fiscal year, which could close access to 50,000 disabled students. In 2009-10, $334 million in...
| | Felling blue? how to be happy | | 4 Surefire Secrets of Happy PeopleSo how can you join the ranks of the content? Earlier this year, scientists at the University of Edinburgh and the Queensland Institute of Medical Research in Australia reported that happiness has a strong genetic component, but they agreed that there are steps you can take to weed out the gloom and reap some satisfaction from you life. Here are just a few: 1. Live an examined life. Make an inventory of a typical day, rate each activity on a scale of one to 10, then devise a plan to eliminate everything that ranks below at least a four. Granted, there are certain duties you can't completely rule out (i.e., cleaning the cat's litter box), but you can improve the working conditions (say, by investing in a self-cleaning litter box). 2. Be who you want to be. Use that inventory to ensure that you're living the life you want to live. If every one of your daily activities rates a two or lower, you may want to consider a major overhaul of your life. A University of Wisconsin study found that women who were satisfactorily absorbed in their lives had fewer stress hormones and less markers for heart disease. 3. Engage in new... | |
| | Misery is the secret to happiness. We can not avoid miseries so accept them. | | If we accept that miseries are part of life then we can be less unhappy.
The key to a happy relationship could be accepting that some miserable times are unavoidable, experts say. Therapists from California State University, Northridge and Virginia Tech say accepting these problems is better than striving for perfection.
| | Cordless Jump-Rope Can Help the Clumsy | | And for that idea kicking around Clancy's head since 1988, the U.S. Patent Office this month awarded the 52-year-old Mansfield, Ohio, man a patent. Its number: 7037243. What makes this invention work is the moving weights inside the handles. They simulate the feel of a rope moving, Clancy said.
But why jump rope without a rope? It's perfect for the clumsy, Clancy said. "If you are still jumping, you're still using your legs as well as your arms, and getting the cardiovascular workout. You just don't have to worry about tripping on the rope."
It is also good for mental institutions and prisons where rope is a suicide risk, said Clancy, who works as a laundry coordinator in a state prison. And low ceiling fans aren't a hazard any more, he said.
The idea isn't all that crazy, said Mike Ernst, a professor of kinesiology at California State University in Dominguez Hills. The more he thought about it, the more Ernst said he could see the benefit, adding that,"Do you need to jump with a rope? You don't," Ernst said. "But I wouldn't buy the product, I can tell you that. I'm not an idiot." High-tech handles aren't needed. You could even use toilet paper holders, Ernst...
| | Teen 'sport killings' of homeless on the rise | | MILWAUKEE, Wisconsin (CNN) -- All Nathan Moore says he wanted to do was smoke pot and get drunk with his friends.
Killing Rex Baum was never part of the plan that day in 2004. "It all started off as a game," Moore said.
The 15-year-old and his friends were taunting the homeless man -- throwing sticks and leaves -- after having a couple of beers with him.
No big deal, Moore says, but he's sorry for what came next.
It was a mistake, he said, a sudden primal surge that made him and his friends Luis Oyola, 16, and 17-year-old Andrew Ihrcke begin punching and kicking Baum. "Luis says 'I'm gonna go hit him,' We're all laughing, thought he was joking around,'" but he wasn't, Moore concedes. "We just all started hitting him."They hurled anything they could find -- rocks, bricks, even Baum's barbecue grill -- and pounded the 49-year-old with a pipe and with the baseball bat he kept at his campsite for protection.
Ihrcke smeared his own feces on Baum's face before cutting him with a knife "to see if he was alive," Moore said.
After destroying Baum's camp, the boys left the homeless man -- head wedged in his own grill -- under a piece of plastic where they hoped the "animals...
| | In California, Statewide College Faculty Strike Possible | | University strikes usually involve a campus's least visible employees—like janitors or grad students. But in the next few weeks, the Ph.D.-clad faculty of the 23-campus California State University system could stage a strike of its own, San Francisco State's Golden Gate[X]Press reports. The disparity between faculty salaries and the generous salaries of the college's executive officers, who often take home six figures in annual earnings and compensation packages, the San Francisco Chronicle has reported, was the focus of a march through San. | |
